I just joined StudieVZ (pronounced Schtoodee Fau Tzed), something I have known about for a while, but have had no desire to join. It's basically Germany's version of Facebook.
I decided to join today, because I've been meeting a lot of people who don't have facebook, but do have StudieVZ.
So after I created my profile, I decided to find some people I know. Then I decided to use the search feature and look to see if there are any Julicher's. Well, there are almost 40 hits, and all of them have the last name Jülicher. (The city in Germany where my ancestors come from is spelled Jülich, but the English translation is just, Julich).
So I looked through some of the people's profile pages, and there are groups. One of them is called, "People's whose name is Jülich and have nothing to do with Jülich." The other one is called, "Julicher's who think their last name is cool".
So I've message a couple of people, and I'll see how their response is. There are really quite a lot of people online in Germany that have my last name, and it will be interesting to see if I'm able to actually find a relative of mine.
What's encouraging is, is that many of them come from the area near Jülich or directly from it. So it seems likely that there is some sort of connection. It's only in this part of Germany really, that people have this last name too.
I'll keep you posted on the responses.
